How we install pavers
Site visit and estimate
During your free on-site estimate, we look at the soil, drainage and slope of the ground. We discuss where you want paving, how you will use the space and your budget.
Choose the paver, pattern and colors
We lay out the pattern, borders and colors. Interlocking concrete, natural stone, travertine and porcelain each have a different finish. The material also needs to suit how you will use the space.
Excavate and grade for drainage
We excavate for the paving, establish the drainage slope and compact the subgrade. The new surface needs to meet existing doors, paths and driveway edges.
Build the base under the pavers
We lay and compact Class II road base in layers, then add a leveling layer of sand. This foundation supports the pavers; covering loose soil with sand is no substitute.
Lay and cut the pavers, secure the edges
We lay the pavers in the agreed pattern and cut them to fit edges and curves. Edging keeps the outer pavers in place.
Compact, fill the joints, discuss sealing
We compact the pavers into place and fill the gaps with joint sand. The method depends on the paving material. We also seal pavers, re-level sections that have settled and replace joint sand on existing installations, ours or anyone else's.
Permits and rules for driveways and paving
San Jose: building permits and driveway approvals
On single-family lots, the City of San Jose does not require a building permit for driveways and walkways no more than 30 inches above the surrounding ground, subject to two conditions. They must not cross a basement or story below, and they must not be an ADA route. See the City building-permit list (checked October 2026).
A new, widened or relocated driveway needs a Public Works clearance or permit. Curb, apron or sidewalk work needs a Transportation Department permit. Paving over most of a front yard is illegal under SJMC 20.30.440. See the City of San Jose driveway rules (checked October 2026).
Monterey: paving near pine and oak roots
On projects that need a building permit, the City of Monterey requires on-grade patios or paving covering more than one-third of a pine or oak feeder-root zone to be permeable. Carmel-by-the-Sea: paving in the public right of way
Carmel-by-the-Sea does not allow paving, gravel or boulders in the public right of way without an encroachment permit. Driveways are excepted from the paving restriction, and a narrow decomposed-granite path to the front door may be allowed without a permit.
