Landscape design for your Campbell home

Start by thinking about how you want to use the yard at your Campbell home in Silicon Valley: a place to eat outside, a clear path to the back door or planting around an existing patio. David lays out the space with you as part of our landscape design service, or we build from plans supplied by your designer.

A front-yard layout also needs room for planting. Campbell's Planning FAQs (checked November 2026) say that paving may cover no more than 50% of the front yard area. Consider that limit before expanding a driveway or joining it to a new paved path.

Work beyond the property line has a separate approval step. The City's Encroachment Permits page (checked November 2026) requires a permit for work in the public right-of-way, including park-strip landscaping, street-tree installation and driveway approaches.

Planning patios and planting around Campbell trees

Before deciding on your patio's size and shape, identify the trees that will stay. On single-family residential properties, the City's Tree Removal Permits checklist (checked November 2026) identifies oak, redwood, cedar and ash trees as protected when their diameter reaches 12 inches, measured 4 feet above grade. On other properties, that size threshold applies to any species, subject to the checklist's exemptions.

The checklist also protects Heritage Trees and trees shown on approved landscaping plans or required by an earlier approval. It exempts fruit and eucalyptus trees regardless of size and warns that approval to remove protected trees is difficult to obtain and frequently denied.

For construction, Campbell's Tree Protection Standards (checked November 2026) call for protective fencing at least as far from the trunk as the dripline. Pruning to accommodate grading or construction requires the City's express written approval. Complete these checks before digging for a path, wall or irrigation trench.

Where the layout calls for new beds or trees, our planting and tree installation service can be included in the same project as the patio and irrigation.

Campbell fence heights and wall approvals

Campbell's fence guidance (checked November 2026) gives a general fence limit of 6 feet, including lattice, reduced to 3 feet 6 inches in front-yard and street-side-yard areas. A taller fence is not automatically allowed just because it falls below a building-permit threshold.

The City's Simple Construction application guide (checked November 2026) says fences taller than 7 feet, walls taller than 3 feet and all electric gates need a building permit. It separately requires prior Planning approval of a Fence Exception for fences, walls and gates over 6 feet or otherwise outside the fencing standards.

The guide refers to walls but does not explain separately how to measure retaining walls. For a proposed seat wall or retaining wall, confirm the applicable requirements with Campbell Building Inspection at (408) 866-2130 before settling on its height.

When to run sprinklers and apply for lawn-replacement rebates in Campbell

San Jose Water's conservation guidance (checked November 2026) asks customers not to use sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., to avoid landscape runoff and not to water outdoors within 48 hours of measurable rainfall.

Separately, Valley Water's permanent water-use prohibitions (checked November 2026) prohibit overhead irrigation between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and irrigation during or within 48 hours of rainfall of at least 0.25 inches. They also prohibit more than incidental runoff and use of broken irrigation equipment.

We suggest running sprinklers before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m. to meet both sets of time restrictions. That suggestion does not override the rainfall restrictions. For planted beds, a conversion to drip irrigation can be included in the yard project.

For a qualifying lawn conversion, review the Valley Water landscape rebate program (checked November 2026) before removing the grass. A pre-inspection is required; keep the lawn in place and obtain the written Notice to Proceed before starting work or purchasing equipment. Confirm the current eligibility and funding for your address.

Budgeting for a Campbell backyard renovation

Use our published San Jose landscaping cost guide as a starting budget reference, rather than a Campbell price list. Its San Jose figures include about $15 to $30 per sq ft for a paver patio, $3,000 to $10,000 for irrigation and about $2,000 to $5,000 for planting projects.

The same San Jose figures put drainage corrections at $1,500 to $8,000 and lighting at $2,000 to $6,000. A full backyard renovation costs $25,000 to $75,000+ and usually takes 2 to 6 weeks. We establish the work needed and the quote for your Campbell property at the site visit.

For the materials and systems in your yard, our warranty terms are: pavers, lifetime on materials and workmanship; artificial turf, 15 years; irrigation, lighting and drainage, 2 years each; plants, up to 1 year.

Big job: stump removal, full irrigation replacement, new sod, paver driveway, retaining walls, and lighting. It turned out more beautiful than we imagined. We liked the results so much we had them redo the front yard a few months later.

I cannot recommend this company enough. David turned my backyard, basically a giant hill of dirt and weeds, into a gorgeous oasis of fruit trees, plants, flowers, and retaining walls. Working with him was a real pleasure and the pricing was very fair.

This was our second time using Landscape Associates, at a different property. David, Obed, and the crew added new paver stones, a planter, and expanded our irrigation. They even took care of drainage issues the original home builders had left behind.

Great communication throughout and they walked us through every step. The paver patio and driveway are flawlessly integrated. We would absolutely hire them again. In fact I was already texting David about redoing the entire front yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call (408) 207-5545
Is landscape design included in a Campbell estimate?

For Campbell homeowners, David works through the yard layout as part of the free on-site estimate and itemized project quote. If you already have plans from a designer, we can build from those instead.

What sprinkler hours should I use in Campbell?

San Jose Water says no sprinklers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Valley Water prohibits overhead irrigation from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our suggested window, before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m., fits both hourly restrictions. Rainfall limits still apply: SJW says no outdoor watering within 48 hours of measurable rainfall, while Valley Water prohibits irrigation during or within 48 hours of at least 0.25 inches of rain. Sources: San Jose Water conservation guidance (checked November 2026) and Valley Water prohibitions (checked November 2026).

How much of my Campbell front yard can be paved?

The City's published limit is 50% of the front yard area, according to its Planning FAQs (checked November 2026). Include existing paving when considering how much space remains for a larger driveway or new walkway.

Can I install a 7-foot fence in Campbell without City approval?

The general height limit is 6 feet including lattice, with a lower 3-foot-6-inch limit in front-yard and street-side-yard areas, per the City's fencing FAQ (checked November 2026). Its building guide (checked November 2026) requires a Planning Fence Exception above 6 feet and a building permit above 7 feet; those are separate thresholds.

Which backyard trees are protected in Campbell?

For single-family properties, the City lists oak, redwood, cedar and ash at 12 inches or more in diameter, measured 4 feet above grade. Heritage Trees and trees tied to approved landscaping plans or approval conditions also receive protection, subject to the checklist's fruit-tree and eucalyptus exemptions. Review the City tree-removal checklist (checked November 2026) before planning a removal.

Can I remove my Campbell lawn before applying for a rebate?

Keep the lawn in place for the required pre-inspection, then wait for the written Notice to Proceed before removal or equipment purchases. Check your proposed conversion against the Valley Water rebate requirements (checked November 2026) before committing to the work.

How much should I budget for a backyard renovation in Campbell?

Our published San Jose reference range for a full backyard renovation is $25,000 to $75,000+, with a usual duration of 2 to 6 weeks. These figures are for San Jose; pricing for your Campbell yard comes from an itemized quote following the free property visit.
