Updated October 2026

Fence height limits for Salinas front, side and back yards

The City's Ordinance Booklet (checked October 2026), a November 2016 edition that salinas.gov still posts for residents, sums up the fence rules: three feet is the maximum in a front or side yard, and rear yard fences are generally six feet tall. Any fence taller than 8 ft needs a building permit first.

The same booklet bars barbed wire, razor wire, ultra-barrier, electrified and other hazardous fences in every residential district. Because the booklet is dated 2016, confirm the current fence height and placement rules for your lot with the City's Community Development Department before a new fence goes in.

Who maintains street trees in front of Salinas homes

Salinas looks after a large public urban forest. According to the City's Public Works maintenance page (checked October 2026), the Urban Forestry Division maintains every tree in the City right-of-way, more than 33,000 trees of over 200 species, handling pruning, removal, planting and restaking.

The City posts a City Tree Permit Application for work on right-of-way trees; ask Urban Forestry whether the tree in front of your home falls within that area. Keep new patios, paths and irrigation trenches clear of its roots, and call Urban Forestry at (831) 758-7233 with questions about a street tree.

Watering hours for Cal Water customers in Salinas

Cal Water returned to Stage 1 of its Water Shortage Contingency Plan on May 8, 2023. Its Stage 1 announcement (checked October 2026) lists the outdoor rules that stayed in place: watering only between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m., no outdoor watering during or within 48 hours after measurable rainfall, and no watering of paved areas.

Cal Water's Schedule 14.1 (checked October 2026) explains the Stage 1 restrictions. When the three-day limit is imposed, ornamental landscapes may be watered on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday at even-numbered addresses, and on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at odd-numbered addresses. Zones that use only drip or micro spray, and hand watering with a bucket or a hose with a shutoff nozzle, are exempt. Leaks must be repaired within five business days of written notice.

If your water comes from another company, follow its rules instead and ask it which ones apply to your address. For Cal Water customers, Schedule 14.1 exempts zones using only drip or micro spray from its day-of-week limits, while any city or county irrigation rules still apply. We build drip systems with Rain Bird or Hunter parts. Our irrigation warranty runs for 2 years.

Cal Water rebates for Salinas homes and businesses

Cal Water's rebate page (checked October 2026) lists residential programs that include a lawn-to-garden rebate, a smart irrigation controller rebate, a high-efficiency sprinkler nozzle rebate and Smart Landscape Tune-Ups. Amounts and availability vary by district, so check the Conservation Portal for the current Salinas terms before work starts.

For agencies, multifamily properties, HOA common areas and commercial sites, Cal Water's AB 1572 page (checked October 2026) lists a lawn-to-garden rebate of $1 per sq ft of turf converted. Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to funding. AB 1572 ends the use of drinking water to irrigate decorative turf at commercial, industrial and institutional sites from January 1, 2028 and at HOA common areas from January 1, 2029; single-family homes are not covered.

Big job: stump removal, full irrigation replacement, new sod, paver driveway, retaining walls, and lighting. It turned out more beautiful than we imagined. We liked the results so much we had them redo the front yard a few months later.

This was our second time using Landscape Associates, at a different property. David, Obed, and the crew added new paver stones, a planter, and expanded our irrigation. They even took care of drainage issues the original home builders had left behind.
