Permits come from Monte Sereno: paving, fence and tree rules
Monte Sereno has its own Building Department at City Hall, 18041 Saratoga-Los Gatos Road. Staff are generally available Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 AM to noon. Applications needing plan check have been online since January 3, 2024. Use the Monte Sereno Building Department (checked October 2026), rather than Los Gatos or the County.
City exemptions cover walks and driveways no more than 30 in above grade, provided they are not over a basement or story. Other approvals may apply. Fences up to 7 ft are building-permit exempt under the City building FAQ (checked October 2026).
Monte Sereno zoning still caps fences at 3 ft in front yards unless a site development permit is approved, and 6 ft at side and rear yards. No fence may exceed 6 ft anywhere on the lot. See the separate City fence limits (checked October 2026).

Funded through June 30, 2027, or until funds run out. The ordinance also bars more than incidental runoff and watering during or within 48 hours after 0.25 in of rain.
Valley Water excludes artificial turf from its lawn-conversion rebate for Monte Sereno properties.
