Landscape design and installation in Los Altos

A Los Altos landscape design starts with a site visit, then a plan, material choices and an itemized quote. Our crew builds the agreed design. The project quote shows the cost of each part, including the front yard, pool surround, outdoor room and planting.

For Los Altos homes with mature oaks, the layout starts with the trees you intend to keep. Our Los Altos landscape design and construction work brings paving, planting and water management into one plan. The published San Jose renovation guide for Los Altos budgeting lists full backyard renovations at $25,000 to $75,000+, with a guide timeline of 2 to 6 weeks. The site visit establishes the scope.

Paving choices depend on how you use the space, whether it is a long driveway, a place for chairs beside the pool or a route from the kitchen to the garden. The table below outlines material options for each use.

DrivewayInterlocking concreteThe layout accounts for vehicle access and the driveway entrance.
PatioConcrete or natural stoneThe furniture layout helps determine the patio border.

WalkwayNatural stone or concreteThe walkway connects the front entrance with garden paths.
StepsStone or concrete unitsSteps connect different yard levels.

Our published San Jose patio range is about $15 to $30 per sq ft installed. For a 400 sq ft patio in Los Altos, the approximate budget calculation is 400 x $15 = $6,000 and 400 x $30 = $12,000. Our published San Jose guide gives 3 to 7 days for most patios. Read about paver options for Los Altos patios; pavers carry a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship.

Fence rules, wall permits and drainage on Los Altos Hills slopes

City of Los Altos fences have a 6 ft maximum, reduced to 4 ft in the required front-yard setback and within 5 ft of the exterior side line of a corner lot. Source: Los Altos fence code (checked October 2026).

The Town of Los Altos Hills requires a Zoning Permit for any fence, column or wall. A building permit may also be necessary and is issued only after the zoning permit. Its maximum fence height is 6 ft on property lines and in setbacks not adjacent to a road. See the Town fence and wall packet (checked October 2026). For a City property, confirm with the Los Altos Building Division before you plan a wall.

Pricing for Los Altos Hills retaining walls is based on the wall's face area, measured in square face feet, rather than length alone. Our published San Jose guide range is about $50 to $100 per square face foot. Our published San Jose range for drainage corrections is $1,500 to $8,000. Where a wall meets a patio or lawn is part of drainage planning for a Los Altos slope.

Where we work in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills

North Los Altos and the lots near downtown have flat yards and mature trees. Existing trees and the path to the house are the starting points for a front-yard plan.

Around Loyola Corners, older ranch houses and large front yards leave room to consider planting beds alongside the entrance. Our published San Jose guide range for garden beds and planting is about $2,000 to $5,000.

Rancho and Country Club properties include larger lots, pool surrounds and long driveways. An itemized quote shows the paving cost for each of those areas.

For Woodland Acres and lots along Foothill Expressway, the design discussion covers the front-yard layout and access. Cupertino and Sunnyvale are nearby; compare our work in Saratoga gardens, Los Gatos yards and San Jose landscapes.

Los Altos Hills has sloped lots and septic systems in places. As with a sloped property in Monte Sereno, the usable outdoor areas help determine how much paving to include.

Tree permits, water suppliers, watering rules and rebates in Los Altos

City of Los Altos protected trees include those at 38 in circumference (12 in diameter), measured 48 in above grade, and native species at 10 in diameter. Removal requires a Tree Removal Permit: City tree guidance (checked October 2026). Plan new Los Altos planting around retained trees; our plant warranty runs up to 1 year.

In Los Altos Hills, a heritage oak is any Quercus at 36 in circumference, about 12 in diameter, measured 4 ft above the root crown. The removal permit fee is $250, waived only for an immediate hazard or a dead tree that is a fire hazard. Read the Town oak removal requirements (checked October 2026).

California Water Service serves Los Altos through its Los Altos Suburban district. Most of Los Altos Hills uses Purissima Hills Water District, supplied by SFPUC; parts use California Water Service. Check your address before planning Los Altos irrigation. Our published San Jose irrigation range is $3,000 to $10,000. The Town also has water-efficient landscape rules (checked October 2026).

For eligible Los Altos lawn conversions, Valley Water publishes a $2 per sq ft base rate with a combined $3,000 lifetime cap per residential site across rebate types; artificial turf is not rebated. At least 75 sq ft of lawn must be converted, with 50% coverage by qualifying plants and the lawn still in place at the pre-inspection, and the program is funded through June 30, 2027, or until funds run out. Apply and receive the Notice to Proceed before work or equipment purchases: Valley Water rebate terms (checked October 2026). Compare Los Altos turf and sod choices with low-water planting ideas for a Los Altos garden.

For properties on Valley Water-supplied potable water, Ordinance 23-02 prohibits overhead irrigation from 9 AM to 6 PM, more than incidental runoff, and watering during or within 48 hours after 0.25 in of rain. See Valley Water watering restrictions (checked October 2026); identify your supply before applying these rules to a Hills property.

Big job: stump removal, full irrigation replacement, new sod, paver driveway, retaining walls, and lighting. It turned out more beautiful than we imagined. We liked the results so much we had them redo the front yard a few months later.

I cannot recommend this company enough. David turned my backyard, basically a giant hill of dirt and weeds, into a gorgeous oasis of fruit trees, plants, flowers, and retaining walls. Working with him was a real pleasure and the pricing was very fair.

This was our second time using Landscape Associates, at a different property. David, Obed, and the crew added new paver stones, a planter, and expanded our irrigation. They even took care of drainage issues the original home builders had left behind.

Great communication throughout and they walked us through every step. The paver patio and driveway are flawlessly integrated. We would absolutely hire them again. In fact I was already texting David about redoing the entire front yard.

Our published San Jose guide figures provide a starting point: about $2,000 to $5,000 for garden beds and planting, or $25,000 to $75,000+ for a full backyard renovation. After the site visit, an itemized project quote sets out the Los Altos price for your chosen areas and materials.

Will the same team design and install my Los Altos landscape?

Yes, we start with a site visit in Los Altos, develop the layout, select materials and present an itemized quote before our crew begins installation. Planning the front yard, pool surround, outdoor room and planting together helps the design reflect how you want to use the property.

How can I estimate a Los Altos paver patio budget?
