Landscape design and installation costs in San Jose

The on-site estimate is free, and the project quote lists individual items. Our published San Jose renovation guide puts a full backyard with pavers, walls, turf and lighting at $25,000 to $75,000+. The Saratoga project cost guide gives $15,000 to $150,000+ for projects there. These ranges cover different scopes and sites.

For a smaller San Jose project, a 300 sq ft paver patio at about $15 to $30 per sq ft would cost 300 x $15 = $4,500 to 300 x $30 = $9,000. The example also includes the published irrigation range of $3,000 to $10,000 and planting from about $2,000 to $5,000. The totals are $4,500 + $3,000 + $2,000 = $9,500 and $9,000 + $10,000 + $5,000 = $24,000.

That $9,500 to $24,000 example covers those three items only. Walls, drainage corrections, lighting and a kitchen would change the scope. A clear breakdown of demolition, access and ground preparation also makes project totals easier to compare.

How long a landscape construction project takes

Our guide lists 2 to 6 weeks for a full San Jose renovation; most paver patios there take 3 to 7 days. Our guide lists timelines for full renovations in Monte Sereno of 3 to 5 weeks, or 6 to 10 weeks with walls, lighting or HOA review. Engineering, steep access, approvals and weather can affect the schedule. These published ranges are estimates, not confirmed completion dates for your project.

Landscape permits, watering rules and rebates by city

On single-family and duplex lots, San Jose walls higher than 2 ft above existing grade require building and Planning permits. A surcharge, or a height of 4 ft or more from footing bottom to wall top, also triggers a Public Works Grading Permit. See the City of San Jose wall rules (checked October 2026).

On single-family and duplex lots, San Jose requires Public Works clearance or a permit for new, expanded or relocated driveways; work on a curb, apron or sidewalk requires a Transportation Department permit. Those approvals are described in the City driveway guidance (checked October 2026). Ask us about permits when discussing the proposed work.

For Santa Clara County properties on Valley Water-supplied potable water, Ordinance 23-02 bars overhead irrigation between 9 AM and 6 PM, more than incidental runoff, and watering during or within 48 hours after 0.25 in of rain. Read the Valley Water ordinance (checked October 2026).

Valley Water lists a $2 per sq ft base lawn-conversion rebate and a base combined lifetime cap of $3,000 per residential site across rebate types; retailer-specific rates and caps differ. Funding lasts until June 30, 2027, or funds run out. Conversion requires at least 75 sq ft and 50% qualifying-plant coverage; lawn must remain for pre-inspection. Artificial turf is excluded. Receive the Notice to Proceed before work or equipment purchases. See Valley Water eligibility and retailer-specific rates and caps (checked October 2026).

Peninsula requirements differ: Cal Am publishes a Monterey Main-system watering schedule, covered on our Monterey landscape page. Carmel-by-the-Sea prohibits new artificial turf and its repair or replacement; our Carmel landscape page explains the city boundary (checked October 2026). For other local requirements, use the city-by-city planning pages.

How we run a landscape build

  1. Free on-site estimate and yard layout

A free on-site estimate starts with your intended layout, whether that means a paver sitting area, new sod or both. Access to the yard and existing ground conditions affect the work needed.

  2. Put the work into an itemized quote

The project quote lists paving, irrigation and planting separately. The breakdown makes it easier to see how the cost of the selected materials and areas fits your budget.

  3. Discuss permits for walls and driveway changes

Ask us about permits before including a retaining wall or driveway change. San Jose requirements depend on wall height, retained loads and the driveway work proposed.

  4. Prepare the ground, retaining walls and drainage

Grading, retaining walls and drainage prepare the site for the finished landscape. Pavers and sod go in after this preparation, with their placement based on ground levels and drainage.

  5. Install surfaces and planted areas

Pavers or concrete define the usable surfaces; irrigation serves the sod and planted beds. Turf, plants and light fixtures complete the planned landscape.

  6. Walk through the finished landscape and warranty terms

The walkthrough covers the installed features and their service-specific terms. Paver coverage is lifetime for materials and workmanship; the other stated terms appear below.

Brands and warranties on a full build

Product choices include Belgard, Techo-Bloc, Calstone and Basalite for pavers and wall systems. For watering, we use Rain Bird and Hunter, plus Rachio and Hunter Hydrawise controllers. Lighting options include Volt, FX Luminaire and Kichler; artificial lawn options include SYNLawn and Purchase Green.

For the pavers in your build, our lifetime warranty includes both materials and workmanship. Artificial turf coverage runs for 15 years; irrigation, lighting and drainage each have 2 years, while plants have up to 1 year. We also offer ongoing maintenance after the build.

Big job: stump removal, full irrigation replacement, new sod, paver driveway, retaining walls, and lighting. It turned out more beautiful than we imagined. We liked the results so much we had them redo the front yard a few months later.

I cannot recommend this company enough. David turned my backyard, basically a giant hill of dirt and weeds, into a gorgeous oasis of fruit trees, plants, flowers, and retaining walls. Working with him was a real pleasure and the pricing was very fair.

This was our second time using Landscape Associates, at a different property. David, Obed, and the crew added new paver stones, a planter, and expanded our irrigation. They even took care of drainage issues the original home builders had left behind.

If I could give more stars I would. Workers showed up every single day at 8:30am sharp. David was always easy to reach and when I had changes mid-project, they accommodated every one without complaint. The customer service really set them apart.

Great communication throughout and they walked us through every step. The paver patio and driveway are flawlessly integrated. We would absolutely hire them again. In fact I was already texting David about redoing the entire front yard.

We are very happy with the results. David installed a new front lawn and side yard plantings and the whole project wrapped up in a week. We were impressed that they renewed our entire irrigation system as part of the job. Would recommend to anyone in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call (408) 207-5545
Are you an outdoor living spaces contractor in San Jose?

Yes. An outdoor living space is a full landscape installation with the living areas built in: a paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, seat walls, low-voltage lighting and the planting around them, priced as one itemized project. On the kitchen, we have a licensed plumber do the gas and a licensed electrician do the electrical (110 and 220); our crew builds everything around them.

How much does a full backyard renovation cost in San Jose?

For a full backyard renovation, our published San Jose guide gives $25,000 to $75,000+, covering a combination of pavers, walls, turf and lighting. For a smaller project, San Jose planting costs start in the range of about $2,000 to $5,000. The free on-site estimate itemizes the work selected for your property.

How long does a full backyard renovation take?

The published timeline for a full backyard renovation in San Jose is 2 to 6 weeks. The guide lists 3 to 5 weeks for full renovations in Monte Sereno, or 6 to 10 weeks when walls, lighting or HOA review are involved. Engineering, approvals, access and weather can change the schedule; a guide range is not a promised finish date.

What work can be included in a complete landscape installation?

A complete project can combine demolition, grading, drainage, retaining walls, pavers or concrete, irrigation, artificial turf or sod, planting, lighting and an outdoor kitchen. Landscape Associates of CA prices the selected work as an itemized project. The San Jose guide's full-renovation range of $25,000 to $75,000+ covers pavers, walls, turf and lighting.

Can you build from my designer's or architect's plans?

Yes. We build from homeowner sketches, architect plans and landscape designer drawings. If you have no plan yet, we lay out the yard with you at the free on-site estimate: where the patio goes, what stays, which areas are planted. Either way the itemized quote lists each part of the work before construction starts.

Can a complete yard renovation be divided into separate phases?

The itemized project quote provides a basis for discussing phases, with drainage and ground preparation planned before pavers, turf or planted beds. Irrigation goes in before planting, even if the beds are planned for a later phase. During the free on-site estimate, we can discuss which parts depend on earlier work and which might be done separately.

Which permits may be needed for walls and driveways in San Jose?

On single-family and duplex lots, San Jose walls above 2 ft from existing grade need building and Planning permits; a wall supporting a surcharge or measuring 4 ft or more from footing bottom to top also requires a Public Works Grading Permit. See City wall guidance (checked October 2026). New, expanded or relocated driveways require Public Works clearance or a permit; curb, apron or sidewalk work needs a Transportation Department permit: City driveway requirements (checked October 2026). Ask us about permits; other cities have separate local requirements.

What ground preparation and irrigation come before planting?

Ground preparation, walls and drainage come ahead of the finished surfaces and planting. Irrigation needs to reach the intended lawn and beds before sod or plants go in. Planning the patio, planting areas and irrigation together helps them fit the same layout.

Can irrigation and outdoor lighting be included with a new patio?

Yes, irrigation and lighting can be included in the same itemized landscape project as a patio. Our published San Jose ranges are $3,000 to $10,000 for irrigation and $2,000 to $6,000 for landscape lighting. Both services carry 2-year coverage, and their positions need to be considered alongside the paving and planting layout.

What warranty applies to each landscape installation service?

Pavers have lifetime warranty coverage for both materials and workmanship. Artificial turf has 15 years of coverage, while irrigation, lighting and drainage have 2 years each. Plants have coverage up to 1 year. Those terms apply to their individual services within the project, so a mixed landscape includes several different coverage periods.

Is full landscape installation available for commercial properties?

We offer landscape installation for commercial and residential properties, as well as ongoing maintenance. Landscape Associates of CA is fully insured and provides an itemized quote for each project. A free on-site estimate can address the combination of paving, drainage, irrigation, planting and lighting proposed for the property, within our San Jose to Carmel service area.
