Choose artificial turf for a lawn without regular mowing or irrigation. Sod suits you if you want living grass and can keep up with watering and lawn care. For a sunny San Jose play area, weigh surface heat as well as upkeep. For pets, consider cleaning and drainage with either choice.

The table reflects Valley Water rebate rules (checked October 2026), Monterey Peninsula lawn-removal conditions (checked October 2026) and Carmel-by-the-Sea artificial turf policy (checked October 2026). The programs and city restriction are explained below.

What artificial turf costs in San Jose

Use $8 to $15 per square foot installed to plan an artificial turf project in San Jose. Our published range for California includes materials and labor. Measure the lawn area itself, leaving out patios and planting beds. These examples give a rough budget, not a quote for your yard.

  • 500 sq ft: 500 x $8 = $4,000; 500 x $15 = $7,500 installed.
  • 1,000 sq ft: 1,000 x $8 = $8,000; 1,000 x $15 = $15,000 installed.
  • 1,500 sq ft (500 + 1,000): 1,500 x $8 = $12,000; 1,500 x $15 = $22,500 installed.

The price depends on removing the old lawn, preparing the aggregate base and drainage, cutting and fitting the turf, and adding infill. Getting equipment into the yard also affects the cost. A Saratoga side yard with narrow access is a different job from an open front lawn. We price each project separately and itemize the estimate.

For a lawn that is part of a larger project, see our San Jose landscaping cost guide and Saratoga landscaping cost guide. We price sod at the site visit; the artificial turf range does not apply to it.

Rebates and watering rules for artificial turf and lawns

01

Valley Water: rebates for replacing lawn with plants, not artificial turf

Valley Water does not offer rebates for artificial turf. Its base rebate for replacing lawn with plants is $2 per sq ft. The lifetime cap per home is $3,000 across all rebate types combined. San Jose Municipal Water customers with single-family properties or properties with up to four units get $3 per sq ft for the first 1,000 sq ft and $2 per sq ft after that, capped at $4,000. Convert at least 75 sq ft, with 50% coverage from qualifying plants. Keep the lawn in place for the pre-inspection. Apply and wait for the Notice to Proceed before starting work or buying equipment. Valley Water landscape rebates (checked October 2026).

02

Monterey Peninsula: lawn-removal rebate with a 15-year no-lawn deed restriction

For properties inside the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, MPWMD pays $1 per sq ft for lawn removal, up to 2,500 sq ft, with a 250 sq ft minimum; apply within 120 days of purchase. Replace the lawn with low-water plants or permeable surfaces. Any irrigation in that area must use a drip system. A 15-year deed restriction prevents re-installing lawn anywhere on the site. The District lists synthetic turf as acceptable, but local city rules still apply. MPWMD landscape rebates (checked October 2026).

03

Carmel-by-the-Sea: new artificial turf is prohibited

Carmel-by-the-Sea prohibits new artificial turf installation, repair and replacement citywide under Policy 2025-02, effective March 4, 2025. The policy does not require existing turf to be removed. This policy does not apply to Carmel Valley or Pebble Beach. A Carmel mailing address alone does not tell you which rules apply. City of Carmel-by-the-Sea policy and handouts (checked October 2026).

04

Watering hours depend on your water supply

For properties using drinking water supplied by Valley Water, Ordinance 23-02 prohibits overhead irrigation from 9 AM to 6 PM. It also prohibits more than incidental runoff and watering during or within 48 hours after 0.25 inches of rain. Identify your water supplier before setting the controller. Valley Water conservation ordinance (checked October 2026).

Cal Am's published watering schedule for the Monterey Main system allows watering only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, before 9 AM or after 5 PM. The limit is 15 minutes per station per day. Its page gives no effective date. Satellite systems on the Peninsula have their own schedule. Cal Am Monterey watering schedule (checked October 2026).

How we install artificial turf

  1. Site visit and estimate

During your free estimate visit, we assess the soil, drainage and sun exposure and ask how you use the lawn. We discuss SYNLawn and Purchase Green options for pet areas, play spaces or front yards.

  2. Remove the old lawn and grade for drainage

We remove existing vegetation, grade the surface for drainage and compact the base material. The lawn needs a stable foundation and a way for water to drain away.

  3. Crushed-stone base and weed barrier

We install a crushed aggregate base and weed barrier beneath the artificial turf. We plan base preparation and drainage before laying the turf.

  4. Lay the turf, fit the seams, secure the edges

We lay the selected artificial turf, fit the seams, add infill and secure the edges. We cut the turf to fit where the lawn meets paving, planting beds and paths.

  5. Inspection and care walkthrough

We inspect the finished turf and explain how to rinse it, brush it and clear away debris. You won't need to mow, but you will still need to clean up after pets and care for the turf with everyday use.

New sod lawns

Natural sod suits you if you want living grass and are happy to mow, feed and water it. On the Monterey Peninsula we lay cool-season fescue blends; in San Jose and the South Bay a fescue or fescue-Bermuda blend handles the summer heat. We also offer ongoing maintenance: mowing, edging, feeding and aeration for sod; brushing, debris removal and infill top-ups for artificial turf. October to November is the best time to plant it. We prepare and amend the soil, check irrigation lines and lay the sod with clean edges beside paths and patios.

For sod irrigation, we use Rain Bird and Hunter, with Rachio or Hunter Hydrawise controllers. Irrigation carries a 2-year warranty. Watering must follow the rules for your supplier, including the hours and rain restrictions described above.

Big job: stump removal, full irrigation replacement, new sod, paver driveway, retaining walls, and lighting. It turned out more beautiful than we imagined. We liked the results so much we had them redo the front yard a few months later.

This was our second time using Landscape Associates, at a different property. David, Obed, and the crew added new paver stones, a planter, and expanded our irrigation. They even took care of drainage issues the original home builders had left behind.

If I could give more stars I would. Workers showed up every single day at 8:30am sharp. David was always easy to reach and when I had changes mid-project, they accommodated every one without complaint. The customer service really set them apart.

Great communication throughout and they walked us through every step. The paver patio and driveway are flawlessly integrated. We would absolutely hire them again. In fact I was already texting David about redoing the entire front yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call (408) 207-5545
What are the downsides of artificial turf?

It gets hot in full summer sun, so shade or a rinse matters on a south-facing yard. Valley Water does not rebate it (rebate terms (checked October 2026)), and Carmel-by-the-Sea prohibits new installation, repair and replacement (City policy (checked October 2026)). It still needs brushing, rinsing and clean-up after pets. Artificial turf carries a 15-year warranty.

Does rain drain through artificial turf?

Yes. The turf has a permeable backing and sits on a compacted crushed-rock base, so rain soaks through into the base rather than running off the surface. The turf does not fix a low spot on its own: base preparation and drainage come first in every installation we do, and a yard that pooled before is graded or drained before the base and turf go in.

Which grass grows best in San Jose and on the Monterey Peninsula?

Cool-season fescue blends do well in the fog and mild summers of the Monterey Peninsula. In San Jose and the rest of the South Bay, a fescue blend or a fescue-Bermuda mix stands up better to summer heat. Sun, shade, soil and how the lawn is used decide the final choice at the site visit.

How much does artificial turf installation cost per square foot?

Our published range for California is $8 to $15 per square foot installed, including materials and labor. In San Jose, the final price depends on lawn removal, base preparation, drainage, edges, infill and site access. Landscape Associates of CA provides a free on-site estimate with an itemized project price.

How much does it cost to install 1,000 sq ft of artificial turf?

At $8 to $15 per square foot installed, 1,000 sq ft costs $8,000 to $15,000: 1,000 x $8 = $8,000 and 1,000 x $15 = $15,000. This range includes materials and labor. Use it to plan your budget. At the site visit we look at preparation, drainage and access, then give you an itemized estimate.

Can I get a Valley Water rebate for artificial turf?

No. Valley Water does not offer rebates for artificial turf. Its base rebate for replacing lawn with plants is $2 per sq ft. The combined lifetime residential cap is $3,000. San Jose Municipal Water customers with single-family properties or properties with up to four units get $3 per sq ft for the first 1,000 sq ft and $2 per sq ft after that, capped at $4,000. Projects must convert at least 75 sq ft, with qualifying plants covering half the area. Apply and wait for the Notice to Proceed before starting work or buying equipment. Valley Water landscape rebates (checked October 2026).

Can I install artificial turf in Carmel?

Not in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Policy 2025-02 prohibits new artificial turf installation, repair and replacement citywide, effective March 4, 2025. The policy does not require existing turf to be removed. The policy does not apply to Carmel Valley or Pebble Beach; check which jurisdiction your property is in rather than going by the mailing address. City policy and handouts (checked October 2026).

Does artificial turf get hot in summer?

Yes. Artificial turf runs hotter than natural grass in full sun. If children or pets use your San Jose yard, consider the heat as well as the savings in mowing and irrigation. During the estimate visit, we assess sun exposure and ask how you plan to use the lawn. We can discuss both turf and sod with you.

What goes under artificial turf?

Our installation process includes removing existing vegetation, grading for drainage, compacting the base and installing crushed aggregate and a weed barrier. The turf then goes over that prepared foundation, with fitted seams, infill and secure edges. The base and drainage depend on your yard and are part of the plan.

How long is the artificial turf warranty?

Landscape Associates of CA provides a 15-year warranty on artificial turf. Use and care affect how long any lawn looks its best. You will still need to rinse and brush the turf and clear debris.

Do you install natural sod?

Yes. Landscape Associates of CA installs natural sod. We prepare and grade the soil and check the irrigation lines first. Sod needs ongoing mowing, feeding and watering under the rules for your water supplier. We price it at the free on-site estimate.

When is the best time to plant sod?

Before laying sod, plan the soil preparation and irrigation together. Follow your water supplier's rules when you set the watering schedule. We discuss sod and irrigation as part of the free on-site estimate.

Which artificial turf brands do you install, and which areas do you serve?

We install SYNLawn and Purchase Green. Landscape Associates of CA serves San Jose, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Monte Sereno, Monterey and Carmel, including Carmel Valley and Pebble Beach. Carmel-by-the-Sea prohibits new artificial turf, so sod and planting are the alternatives there. City policy and handouts (checked October 2026).
