Our Paver Installation Process

Every paver project at Landscape Associates of CA follows a proven six-step process refined over three decades of work across San Jose, Saratoga, and the greater Bay Area.

1. Consultation & Site Assessment – We visit your property, evaluate soil conditions, drainage patterns, and existing grade. We discuss your design vision, material preferences, and budget to develop a detailed project plan.

2. Design & Material Selection – Our team creates a scaled layout showing paver patterns, borders, and color schemes. We help you choose from interlocking concrete, natural stone, travertine, or porcelain pavers based on your application and aesthetic goals.

3. Excavation & Grading – We excavate to the proper depth (typically 7-9 inches for patios, 12+ inches for driveways), establish correct slope for drainage, and compact the subgrade to prevent future settling.

4. Base Preparation – A compacted gravel base (Class II road base) is installed in lifts, followed by a 1-inch leveling layer of concrete sand. This foundation is what makes pavers last decades without shifting.

5. Paver Installation & Cutting – Pavers are laid in the specified pattern, cut precisely around edges and curves with a wet saw, and tapped into place. We install edge restraints to lock the field in position.

6. Compaction, Joint Sand & Sealing – A plate compactor seats the pavers into the sand bed. Polymeric joint sand is swept into the gaps to prevent weed growth and insect intrusion. Optional sealing provides UV protection and enhanced color.

Paver Types: Which Material Is Right for Your Project?

Choosing the right paver material depends on your project type, budget, and design preferences. Here is how the most popular options compare:

Interlocking Concrete Pavers are the most popular choice for driveways and patios. They offer excellent strength (8,000+ PSI), come in hundreds of colors and patterns, and cost $12-$20 per square foot installed. They handle heavy vehicle loads and are easy to repair by replacing individual units.

Natural Stone Pavers (flagstone, bluestone, slate) provide a one-of-a-kind organic look with natural color variation. They cost $18-$35 per square foot installed and work beautifully for patios, garden paths, and outdoor kitchen areas. Each piece is unique, creating an upscale aesthetic.

Travertine Pavers are a premium choice for pool decks and patios. Their naturally cool surface stays comfortable underfoot in direct sun, and their tumbled finish provides excellent slip resistance. Expect $20-$30 per square foot installed.

Porcelain Pavers are the newest option, offering near-zero water absorption, extreme scratch resistance, and consistent sizing for precision installations. At $25-$40 per square foot installed, they are ideal for modern designs and areas where staining resistance is critical.

Permeable Pavers are designed with wider joints to allow rainwater infiltration, reducing runoff and helping comply with California stormwater regulations. They work for driveways, patios, and walkways and cost $18-$30 per square foot installed. Learn more about our drainage solutions for pairing permeable pavers with proper stormwater management.

Paver Installation FAQs

Common questions about our paver installation services in San Jose & Northern California

Paver installation in San Jose typically costs between $15 and $35 per square foot, depending on the paver material, pattern complexity, and site preparation needed. A standard patio project (200–400 sq ft) generally runs $4,000–$14,000, while a full driveway can range from $10,000–$25,000+. Landscape Associates of CA provides free on-site estimates for every project.
Most paver patio installations take 3 to 7 days, depending on the size and complexity. A straightforward 200 sq ft patio may take 3–4 days, while a larger project with grading, drainage work, or intricate patterns can take a full week. Driveway projects typically take 5–7 days. We provide a detailed timeline during our initial consultation.
For driveways, we recommend interlocking concrete pavers or natural stone with a minimum 2.5-inch thickness to handle vehicle loads. For patios, you have more flexibility—travertine, porcelain, bluestone, and thinner interlocking pavers all work well. We help you choose based on your aesthetic preference, budget, and the specific demands of each application.
Yes. According to industry data, a professionally installed paver patio or driveway can increase your home's value by 5–15%, with an average ROI of 60–75%. Pavers also improve curb appeal, which helps homes sell faster. The durability and low maintenance of pavers make them an attractive feature for buyers in the San Jose and Bay Area market.
Permeable pavers are designed with wider joints filled with small aggregate that allows rainwater to filter through into a gravel base underneath, rather than running off into storm drains. This reduces flooding, recharges groundwater, and helps you comply with California stormwater management regulations. We install permeable paver systems for driveways, patios, and walkways.
Yes. We offer paver sealing to protect against staining, fading, and weed growth between joints. Sealing is recommended 6–12 months after installation and every 2–3 years thereafter. We also provide re-leveling and joint sand replacement for existing paver installations that have shifted over time.
Pavers offer several advantages over poured concrete: they’re more flexible (less prone to cracking from soil movement), easier to repair (replace individual pavers instead of entire slabs), available in far more colors and patterns, and generally more durable. Poured concrete can be less expensive upfront, but pavers typically last longer and require less costly repairs over their lifespan.
Landscape Associates of CA provides professional paver installation throughout Northern California, including San Jose, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Campbell, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Monterey, Carmel, and the greater Bay Area. We hold CSLB license #926561 and have over 30 years of experience.
